Program Overview & Research Context

Uncontrolled acute hemorrhage remains one of the primary preventable causes of trauma-related mortality worldwide, posing critical challenges in pre-hospital emergency trauma management, military combat casualties, and complex surgical procedures. Traditional mechanical methods, such as compression bandages and surgical sutures, frequently prove insufficient for irregular wound geometries, deep non-compressible visceral hemorrhages, or patients suffering from coagulopathic conditions. To overcome these critical clinical hurdles, translational biomedical research has shifted toward bioactive, sprayable, and powder-based biomaterial matrices capable of inducing rapid, localized coagulation within seconds.

The Amrita School of Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine (ASNSMM) at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi campus, stands as a premier center of excellence in nanobiotechnology, regenerative medicine, and targeted therapeutics. Co-located with the multidisciplinary Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS), ASNSMM bridges basic material science and direct clinical translation.

Under the sponsorship of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), ASNSMM invites applications from qualified candidates for the position of Junior Research Fellow (JRF). The project focuses on developing next-generation biomaterial-based hemostatic spray and powder platforms engineered for rapid bleeding control, tissue adhesion, and bio-absorbability.

Project Scope & Research Responsibilities

The selected Junior Research Fellow will be engaged across the entire bench-to-bedside research pipeline, gaining comprehensive exposure to advanced formulation development, in vitro hemocompatibility assays, and preclinical surgical animal models:

1. Biomaterials Synthesis & Physicochemical Analysis

  • Formulation of polymeric, polysaccharide, or protein-based bio-absorbable sprays and powder formulations.
  • Characterization of materials using SEM, FTIR, XRD, rheology, porosity analysis, degradation profiles, and fluid absorption capacity.
  • Optimization of aerosolization parameters, powder dispenser stability, and shelf-life mechanics.

2. In Vitro Biological & Hemostatic Assays

  • Assessment of whole blood clotting times, thromboelastography (TEG), and platelet activation kinetics.
  • In vitro cell viability, cytotoxicity (MTT/MTS assays), hemocompatibility, and red blood cell lysis profiling.
  • Evaluation of antibacterial barrier properties and tissue adherence testing.

3. In Vivo Preclinical Surgical Models (Translational Phase):

  • Participation in animal surgical procedures using established Rat and Pig bleeding models (e.g., liver punch, femoral artery transection, and spleen laceration injuries).
  • Quantification of in vivo blood loss, time to hemostasis, tissue healing, histopathology, and systemic biocompatibility.
  • Documentation of experimental findings, protocol standardization, and regulatory compliance reports under CPCSEA guidelines.

Eligibility Criteria & Candidate Profile

Essential Educational Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a First Class Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines from a recognized University or Institute:

  • M.Pharm (Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, or allied pharmaceutical branches)
  • M.Tech / M.E. (Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, Biotechnology)
  • M.Sc. (Molecular Medicine, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Nanobiotechnology, Biophysics, or related life science areas)

Preferred & Desirable Credentials:

  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience with biomaterials characterization instruments (e.g., DLS, FTIR, mechanical testing, rheometers).
  • Practical background in mammalian cell culture, in vitro biological assays, and sterility testing.
  • Familiarity with blood handling, coagulation profiling, or handling small/large laboratory animals is advantageous.
  • National Level Examination qualifications (e.g., CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, GPAT, or ICMR-JRF) will be an added asset.
